Police Launch New Task Force to Combat Road Traffic Accidents

Posted in: Pedestrian Injuries Road Traffic Accidents Wrongful & Accidental Death

A new police unit has been launched to target the number of incidents and fatalities on Glasgow’s roads with the new emphasis following a number of road traffic accidents in the city.

The drive, which is being introduced by Police Scotland will target elderly pedestrians and those considered reckless drivers to try and reduce the number of accidents in the city. Police units will monitor junctions considered dangerous and accident blackspots in the city.

The operation will have six full-time officers with other members of the force also monitoring other areas.

Rise in the Number of Accidents

The number of accidents in Glasgow has sharply risen, with certain groups targeted. Since April, there has been a rise in the number of deaths amongst the elderly with two killed and another left with major injuries. CI Sutherland, the area commander for the city centre, said:

“We are determined to make the roads safer for everyone within Glasgow city centre with a real focus on vulnerable road users.”

“We will have additional resources committed to the campaign with our objective to make a lasting impact on road safety.

“My officers have been out across the city, and we will be continuing this commitment as we seek to educate drivers and pedestrians.

“We will be speaking to vulnerable road users at pedestrian crossings to reinforce safety messages.

“While, on the other hand, enforcing road traffic legislation when it is appropriate to do so.”

“Since the beginning of April two separate incidents at pedestrian crossings have resulted in the sad loss of two lives with another seriously injured.

“Those who were killed and injured were all elderly pedestrians.”

A subsequent nationwide campaign has been launched across the country encouraging safety at junctions and on the roads to all demographics.
