Glasgow to Introduce 20mph Zones to Reduce Road Traffic Accidents

Posted in: Road Traffic Accidents

Glasgow is to introduce 20mph zones in certain areas under plans to cut the number of road traffic accidents in the UK.

The proposals, which are expected to come into force in March 2016, come following the announcement that Edinburgh are to introduce a 20mph zone in certain streets. Recent research showed that despite initiatives from Police Scotland, there was a rise in the number of road traffic accidents in Scotland, and in particular, Glasgow.

Speeding Restrictions to Protect Vulnerable Road Users

Speeding is one of the most common causes of accidents, with speed being one of the main factors in fatal accidents. According to UK road safety statistics in 2013, 3,064 people were killed or seriously injured in crashes where speed was a factor.

It is hoped that the new emphasis on speed in Glasgow would reduce the number of accidents and fatal incidents. A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council stated that they believed a new restriction would improve road safety and protect those most vulnerable on the roads. In a statement the council said:

“Slower traffic speeds lead to fewer accidents. The introduction of a reduced speed limit will have positive benefits of slower vehicles movements, reduced numbers and severity of accidents and a less hectic environment that is more encouraging for cyclists and pedestrians.”

There has been a call from campaigners to follow Edinburgh’s lead in having some restrictions in place around schools. Despite some opposition to the system, a study found that traffic in Glasgow’s city centre moved at an average speed of 22.6mph and that the speed limit could improve traffic congestion.
