A woman who had to wait over an hour and a half for an ambulance after she collapsed in north London has been awarded nearly £5million in compensation. The BBC reports that the 36-year-old genetic scientist now needs 24-hour care having sustained brain damage as a result of the emergency medical team taking more than 100 minutes to get to her. A survey asking over 10,000 people about their experiences of GP practices and out of hours care in Scotland has revealed that many patients are concerned about the way practices deal with medical mistakes when they occur and find it difficult to access GP services. A Fatal Accident Inquiry has ruled that the life of a pregnant woman might have been saved if she had seen a consultant after being admitted to the Princess Royal Maternity in Glasgow in 2008, reports the BBC. Caroline McCall was eight months pregnant when she experienced severe chest pains that she suspected might be a heart attack. The patient safety charity Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA) has welcomed the recommendation that a full unrestricted Duty of Candour be introduced to the NHS. If the Government accepts the recommendation it will be a huge step forward for patients’ rights and patient safety, says the charity. Following the Government’s response to the Mid Staffordshire Public Inquiry, a review was held on proposals to enhance candour in the NHS.
